Why does one phone matter?

One phone matters because both players are already in the room. A hot seat keeps the match there instead of opening a second device.

Passing one phone across a table when nobody has paper is the ordinary case. The purpose is a finished game with a score you can read out loud.

Who goes first is a separate question. A coin flip settles it, and a dice roll does the same job when a coin is the wrong call.

How does a turn work?

The banner names the seat that plays next. Tap an empty square and that seat's mark stays.

For example, X takes the top left and O takes the middle left. X then takes the top middle, and O takes the center. X takes the top right, so the top row is three X marks.

The banner says X wins, and further taps do nothing.

What are the noughts and crosses rules?

The noughts and crosses rules are this same 3 by 3 game. A diagonal counts as three in a row, the same as a row or a column.

  • X places first, then O answers
  • A mark stays where it landed
  • Three matching marks in a line end the game
  • Nine marks with no line is a draw

For example, X on the top left plus the center plus the bottom right is a diagonal win.

How is a hot seat different from online matchmaking?

A hot seat is two people sharing one phone. Online matchmaking looks for a stranger on another device.

You pass the phone instead of waiting in a lobby. Unlike matchmaking, the empty seat is not a computer opponent.

Expecting the other seat to move by itself is the wrong picture of this page. This board lives in the games category.

What happens if you tap a filled square?

The second tap does nothing, and the turn stays put. The note under the grid says that square already has a mark.

Avoid refreshing mid-match and expecting the score to still be there. Nothing is saved, so a refresh clears the tally and the grid.

Does undo remove the point?

Undo takes back one move, and the score follows that move. Undo of a winning line takes that point off the tally.

For example, the top-row win above reads X 1. Undo returns the score to X 0 and gives the turn back to X.

Rematch clears the nine squares and hands the first move to the seat that went second. However, the wins and draws stay on the tally until you press Reset score or leave the page.
