Chess Tac Toe for Two on One Device
How two people play chess tac toe on one phone, which moves are legal, and why four in a line wins.
What is chess tac toe?
Chess tac toe is a 4 by 4 board for two people. Each player has a pawn, a rook, a knight, and a bishop.
You play chess tac toe on this page by passing one phone. Chess tic tac toe and hybrid chess tic tac toe name the same hybrid board game.
Chess piece tic tac toe still ends on four in a line. It does not end on checkmate.
Open Chess Tac ToeWhy does one phone matter?
One phone matters because both players are already in the room. Passing one phone across a table when nobody has a chess set is the ordinary case.
Playing a full match without creating an account keeps the score in the open page, and nothing is saved. A small board is enough for four pieces each.
Tic tac toe is the same hot seat with plain marks. Connect 4 is the gravity board when you want discs instead of pieces.
How does a turn work?
The banner says place while you still hold a piece, and move after the hand is empty. Pick a letter, then tap an empty square.
For example, X places a pawn on the top left and O places a pawn on a different square. X then places the rook, the knight, and the bishop. After that fourth placement, X moves even if O still has a piece to place. A boxed set lets a piece slide once three pieces are down. This board waits until that fourth placement.
A legal move follows the piece. An illegal tap does nothing, and the note names the rule.
Which moves are legal?
A legal move is the one the piece can actually make. Piece movement is checked on every slide, and placement is only onto an empty square.
- A knight moves in an L and can jump
- A rook moves in a straight line and cannot pass through a piece
- A bishop moves on a diagonal and cannot pass through a piece
- A pawn steps one square toward the other player, or captures one square diagonally forward
For example, a knight on the corner can reach the square two across and one down. Any other step from that corner is refused.
For example, a pawn that is already on its far rank turns around on the next move and keeps the new direction until it sits on the new far rank.
Why is this not checkmate?
Checkmate does not win, and the page does not look for it. Four of your own pieces in a line is the only win.
Unlike chess, capturing a piece sends it back to that player hand. Their next turn is a placement again. That player places the captured piece again before any of their pieces can slide.
There is no draw rule, so a board where nobody can make four does not end by itself. Use Rematch to start again.
Expecting checkmate to end the match is the wrong reading. This board lives in the games category.
What does the note say about an illegal tap?
The note names the rule, and the board stays as it was. The common mistake is placing on a square that is already taken. You cannot capture by placing.
Waiting to move until the other player has placed all four gives away turns you already have. Once your hand is empty, you move.
Undo takes back one placement or one move. However, the score stays when you rematch, and the other player moves first.
Taking back a placement that landed on the wrong square returns that piece to your hand. Learning which square a knight can reach from a corner is the move the note is there to protect.
